The featured paper covers how combining VSS visual sensors, NIR analytics, and autonomous control closes the gap between sensor data and real process improvement in sugar crystallisation.

The sugar industry is entering a new phase of automation. Factories have invested in instrumentation, process control systems, and digital monitoring for decades. The next step is different: moving from collecting process data to acting on it autonomously.

“Why Sensors Alone Do Not Improve Sugar Factory Performance: Integrating Visual Monitoring, NIR Analytics and Autonomous Control for Crystallisation Optimisation”

The paper addresses a challenge many sugar factories face today. Online analysers, machine vision systems, and advanced sensors generate large amounts of process data, yet operational improvements often fall short of expectations. The reason is direct: information creates value only when it leads to better decisions.

The presentation will demonstrate how Sucrosphere connects 4 capabilities into a working system:

  • Visual Sensor Systems (VSS) for continuous monitoring of crystal growth and crystal population dynamics.
  • Online NIR analytics for real-time measurement of syrup quality parameters including Brix, Pol, Sucrose, and Purity.
  • Contextual anomaly detection for identifying process disturbances such as false grain formation, crystal melting, and feed quality variations.
